Ubuntu 8.04 on Notebook Asus A6TC with generic kernel

asus

This notebook is really bad choice, if you want run Linux on it. I have ran only Ubuntu so far and there was still no distribution (from 6.06 to 8.04) with no HW problem and without further tweaking. This notebook is primary developed for Windows, but thinks are getting in Linux environment with every new kernel release. As lazy user, I am using generic kernel because of it automatic update via apt-get. It isn't because of I'm not able to compile my own kernel (I have used Gentoo and have compiled kernel really often), it is because of I don't want spend much time with it.

HW contains of:
  • » AMD Turion 64 X2
  • » nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (128 MB)
  • » modem (RJ-11), Bluetooth, Gigabit LAN (RJ-45), WiFi 802.11b, WiFi 802.11g
Print HW using lspci utility:

Boot parameters

After hours of googling and testing I have found boot paramaters, which can make my notabook stable. It has problem with nvidia and realtek driver, which cause it is not stable. The best solution will be to stop the acpi at boot, but that will switched off power management at all. Without it the notebook will not run so much time on battery.
Additional boot paramenters:
pci=assign-busses apicmaintimer idle=poll reboot=cold,hard
Grub file (cat /boot/grub/menu.lst):
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
# grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
# and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.

# You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
# is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not use 'savedefault' or your
# array will desync and will not let you boot your system.
default 1#0

## timeout sec
